Hi! I am Matthew Barlow and I am a sophmore at Tompkins High School. Currently, I am enrolled in commercial photography l. I mostly shoot aviation photography. However, in this class I have taken kinetic, product, fashion, motion blur, B&W, and many more types of photography. Below are my top 10 favorite photos I have taken while in this class. They are in no particular order because I can't decide on the ranking. Enjoy!
Light Party
This photo was part of our kinetic photohraphy unit. I set the exposure to about 15 seconds and ran around with a light stick. I ended up with this beutiful light painting with the different bulbs of light around, swiling wrounf the space.
MacBook Air Float
Part of the product photograpy unit, I chose to photograph my MacBook Air. I wanted to capture how light the compter is, but also capture Apple's simplistic branding and identity. I went for a white background, and a spotlight on the subject. This created some shadows around the subject, while keepking a halo effect. The product was propped up on toilet paper rolls, becasue it was the only option. However, in post processing they were photoshopped out, so it appears that the MacBook Air is floating around the scene.
Popcorn Close-up
This is one of my favorite photos, and was part of the food photography unit. My food was popcorn! When I thought about popcorn, I thought about the movie theater, movies, neon lights, and at the time I was obsessed with Stranger Things bceasue season 5 was coming out. So, I went for an 80's Stranger Things-nostaligic type opf vibe. The vibreant pinks and purples created a nice contrast. Then I went with a wide aperature to make my subject in a low depth of field, so the foreground and background with blurry, with all of the focus on the the popcorn in the middle.
Movie Night
Similar to the last image, this photo was part of the food photography Stranger Things inspired unit. This photo specifically is a bowl of popcorn with a TV remote and the little paper popcorn bag thing. This photo is ment to show someone getting ready to watch a great show or movie on their TV with a delicous bowl of popcorn. Since this was the food photography unit, the main thing in focous is the popcorn in the bowl, with using a wide aperature to blur out the rest of the items in the image.
Roy the Red Raindeer
This photo was part of the holiday photoshoot. The subject is the red reindeer (I named in Roy) and the background includes a snow globe, gift boxes, a candle, and ordainments with powdered sugar (acting like the "snow"). I really like this photo becasue it highlights the holiday spirit with the cozy warm lighting and inviting mood.
Patriot Country
This photo was part of my first photos project, and it was getting used top shooting with a DSLR. It was a nice sunny day, but I had to shoot from inside the school. This photo taught me that it is improtant in photography to wait for the right moment. The wind was pretty on and off, so it was hard capturing the moment that the flags were waving in the wind.
MacBook Air Slim Side
Part of the product photography project, this image was ment to show how thin and light the MacBook Air was. This was done by shooting the side of the laptop, and have it looking like it is balancing on one finger. Of course we did't do that so out of the frame we were holding the computer securely. In lightroom I increased the power of the shadows and highlights to emphisize the sharpness, relating to how fast the computer is.
Skylight Symmetry
In this photo I was trying to highlight the symatry and patterns in the skylight. The project was "promt photography" and mine was photos that look good in color and black and white (B&W). I personally think that any pattern will look good in a B&W filter becasue the different shades of gray makes compositionin interesting.
Technology Trapped
This photo was part of ther choice project, so I got to pick to shoot whatever I wanted. I enjoyed doing light painting in a prior project, so I wanted to do that. This photo is supposed to show how technology can trap you and you can feel hopleless. That is the reasoning behind the cool color scheme with the blues and purples. The subject is holding a phone, with the words "help me" showing their internal thoughts. Finally, I used motion blur to create a dramatic effect to make the subject appearing to "fade" into the grasps of technology.
Nature's Leaves
I like this photo because it is so visually interesting for a B&W photo. It was part of the prompt photography with photos that look good in B&W and color. With this photo, it is a picture of leaves on tree. If you look closely you can se the veins on the individual leaves. I like how in the foreground it is the leaves in perfect clarity, looking sharp and crisp. In the background it is more leaves, but blurred out with the wide apperature.
Thank you for looking for my portfolio for Commerical Photography. It has been a great school year, and I have learned alot of things to apply to my own personal photography. Below are links to my other catalogues.
